An award-winning breast surgeon, Dr. Guy Hingston provides breast
reconstruction services to women in the North Coast area of New South
Wales. Dr. Guy Hingston lectures and writes extensively on this and
other topics related to breast oncology.
A common procedure for women who have undergone a mastectomy for the
treatment of breast cancer, breast reconstruction restores the form of
the breast using either implants or transplanted tissue. Breast implants
are typically constructed of silicone and filled with either sterile
saline or a cohesive silicone gel. Natural tissue grafting serves as the
most common alternative to artificial implants, using the patient's own
skin, muscle, and fat to rebuild the breast. Physicians may take tissue
from the patient's lower abdomen, upper back, buttocks, or inner thigh.
In some cases, the patient's own tissue may not be sufficient for an
acceptable reconstruction, and the surgeon may need to supplement
natural tissue with a silicone implant.
